About Gill

I am an experienced primary school teacher, maths leader, former Assistant and Deputy Head, SLE, MaST, NCETM Teaching for Mastery Specialist and NCETM accredited professional development lead.

Working directly with schools, as an SLE and through the delivery of several different NCETM mastery programmes, I provide high quality CPD and support to improve primary maths teaching. Delegates' evaluations show they value my enthusiasm, passion and deep subject knowledge, consistently rating the CPD I lead as excellent.

In the past three years I have spoken at  a number of national conferences, for example:
  • #MathsConf26 (influencing the teaching of colleagues);
  • #MathsConf29 (the product based approach to multplication)
  • #MathsConf31 (equity in access to the recall of multiplicative facts)
  • ATM Conference 2022 (the product based approach to multiplication)
  • Common Factors 2023 joint subject association conference (improving pupil outcomes in multiplication and division)
  • Shape Up 2024 joint subject association conference (Response to the end of KS1 SATs)
I am also regularly asked to speak at local conferences.

Embedding change

Teaching is complex.  Changing a habit is difficult.  Teachers rely on routines - ways of working which they have automated so they no longer have to think about them.  So if teachers, or schools, are going to adapt their approaches to teaching maths it makes sense that support is essential.  Embedding a mastery approach to teaching takes time.  The wide range of experience I have in supporting primary schools and teachers to adopt mastery approaches to maths teaching enables me to personalise the support I offer to meet the needs of individual schools.  My research as part of my MSc in Mathematics Teacher Education focused on ways of working with primary school maths leads to support them in their role as educators of their peers.  This too informs the way I work with schools.

Testimonials

Thank you so so much for yesterday. You really were so brilliant and have given me so many ideas.

Reception teacher, Bucks
I've learnt more in this one hour than I have through my own research and training at school.  I almost feel inspired!!  I can do it!!

Deputy Head & Year 6 teacher, Wokingham
The support that Gillian has offered has been invaluable in ensuring that all teachers are ‘on board’ and are confident, yet reflective in implementing the Mastery approach. We are all looking forward to her continued support this year and embedding the practises that she has introduced. Many thanks
